Gillings slides into top three

Zoe Gillings has leapt into third place in the Snowboardcross world rankings following a sixth place finish in Bad Gastein, Austria.

The 18-year-old from the Isle of Man is now following in trail of number one ranked snowboarding Olympian Lesley McKenna at the top of the sport's world rankings.

McKenna has taken residence at the top of the world's half-pipe league

and will not be challenged until her next World Cup event in Kreischberg, Austria later this month.

Gillings started brilliantly in Bad Gastein as second fastest in the qualifying run on a very difficult course.

The top 16 went through to the quarter finals where they raced in heats of four with the top two progressing to the semis and finals respectively.

On a difficult terrain Gillings fell once in the quarter finals, twice in the semis, only to miss the final by half a board's length, and once in the consolation final.

Despite those falls she still managed to finish in sixth place out of 43 riders.

Gillings said: "I was made up with qualifying in 2nd, and a 6th place at World Cup is great, but I know I should have made the final so do feel disappointed.

"Still, being 3rd place on the World Cup Standing is pretty amazing."
