Hitting the Slopes This Season? Beware of Costly Falls
Monday, 23 January 2006
With an estimated one million UK travellers[1] embarking on a winter sports holiday this season, Post Office(R) travel services is urging skiers and snowboarders to make sure they have adequate travel insurance to avoid falling down the slippery slope of expensive bills should they have an accident.

Research from Post Office(R) travel services[2] reveals:

- The popularity of France, Austria and Italy as winter holiday destinations is reflected in the number of claims, with almost a third (32 per cent) of claims being made for accidents occurring at French resorts

- A third (33 per cent) of ski/winter sports claims last year were for medical costs, with the average cost being GBP1,200

- 16 per cent of ski/winter sports claims were for lost or stolen luggage, while one claim in ten was for cancellation or non-departure

- Skiers/snowboarders between the ages of 18-29 are most prone to accidents, followed by those aged 40-49. 18-29 year olds were also most likely to lose their baggage or have it stolen

The Post Office(R) Ski and Winter Sports insurance policy covers travellers for:

- Injury, damaged or stolen equipment, resort closure or transportation to another resort if there isn't enough snow

- A wide range of winter sports, including skiing, snowboarding, Nordic skiing and off-piste skiing (with a qualified guide or instructor).

Hugh Stacey, head of travel services at Post Office(R), comments: "Although it's great fun, a winter sports holiday does carry more risk than a relaxing beach holiday as accidents can easily happen on the slopes. The advice from Post Office(R) is to organise adequate cover for your winter sporting activities before you travel, to avoid any painful and costly surprises this ski season."

Post Office(R) travel insurance ski and winter sports cover is available for single trips up to 90 days and as an additional extra to annual multi-trip policies for trips up to 31 days. Prices are held at 2004 prices - for ski and winter sports cover in Europe for a six - nine day break are GBP40.00 for an individual and GBP80.00 for family cover.

Case study is available.
