Skip David Murdoch's British men's team edged past rank outsiders Italy 7-5 in their opening round-robin match. British snowboarder Lesley McKenna crashed out of the half-pipe event after two falls, while team-mate Kate Foster also failed to make the final. American Hannah Teter clinched the half-pipe gold from countrywoman Gretchen Bleiler and Norway's Kjersti Buaas. Russian Svetlana Ishmouratova won the first gold medal of the day - in the the women's 15km individual biathlon. Along with snowboarding, medals will also be on offer in the men's 500m speed skating and pairs figure skating.
