The offer is open to anyone buying an annual insurance policy with Tesco Travel Insurance and covers conventional activities like skiing and snowboarding as well as providing cover for injuries incurred while practising more unusual sports like tobogganing and curling.

Rachel Cutler, the head of Tesco Travel Insurance, said that her organisation was trying to help people get the best bargain deals on their winter holidays.

She added: "You never know what might happen on holiday so it's best to be covered for the unexpected."

Winter sports are becoming increasingly popular in the UK, according to the tour operator Thomson.

Over 1.2 million Brits went skiing last winter, an increase of three per cent on the previous year.
