The ski and snowboard season is set to
kick off with the annual Whiteout Weekend at Midlothian Snowsports Centre.
The family friendly event takes place at
Hillend on Saturday September 29 and Sunday September 30 and offers lots of fun
on and off the slopes.
The weekend offers hundreds of complete beginners the chance to try skiing and
snowboarding for free. And you can also try the latest craze of tubing — a ride
down the nursery slopes in an inflatable rubber ring.
Refreshments will
be available from Cafe 360, which offers users a view of the slopes as well as
stunning views over Edinburgh to Fife on a clear day.
Midlothian
communities spokesman councillor Jim Muirhead said: “The Whiteout Weekend
provides the chance to get involved in some fun activities to mark the start of
the upcoming season. There are activities for skiers and snowboarders of every
standard, including complete beginners, to take part in. The centre boasts the
longest, steepest and most challenging dry slope in Europe as well as nursery
slopes.”
The Whiteout Weekend takes place
from 9.30am to 6.30pm on the Saturday and from 9.30am until 5pm on the Sunday.
Classes take place every 30 minutes and visitors should just turn up to book on
the day, no advance bookings are being taken.
There will be a large,
inflatable crash mat and free coaching for trying out those tricks you've never
dared to attempt before.
A Big Air competition will judge the skills of
those hitting the jump slope and skiers and boarders of all ages and abilities
can take part in a series of open Giant Slalom races for the chance to win some
top prizes.
Alternatively you can use the slopes for practice and the
opportunity to try out the new seasons equipment from the sponsors or just soak
up the party atmosphere.
Admission is free and a shuttle bus will be
also provided for transport from the LRT No 4 bus stop at the bottom of the
hill.
